WHITE SEWING MACHINE treadle sewing cabinet

George was screaming at the TV during the Kentucky Derby.
Hes been excited about our local jockey and the Canadian owned horse running the Derby,
and sure enough they won!
All while I was painstakingly trying to rebuild this treadle sewing cabinet.

Id been looking for some examples of re purposed treadle cabinets on-line
but to my dismay there were very few to be found.

I knew I wanted to paint the metal base in white but what to do to the rest of it ...

The repairs needed were very extensive and frustrating with all the fragile pieces
that had to be fastened back together.

I eventually got it resembling its former self with a few replacement parts.
I maintained the pedal and wheel so if used as a desk,
you can keep your feet amused and occupied.

I lined the drawers in a white wallpaper.

and a french graphic to the top from the graphics fairy.

graphic available here

There is no sewing machine in it anymore and the top doesnt open.

Ive re purposed it into a table to be used as an entry piece, a desk, or even a sofa table.

My Painted Butterfly

I tried something different the other day. Painting. No,,,not like painting painting,,,I mean really painting....like all Van Gogh-like.   I have never really painted anything.

My intention was to do the transfer thing from the Graphics Fairy. Which I did.
But it barely transferred. I dont know what Im doing wrong. All I managed to get was the outline
of the butterfly and the faint writing of the letters.
So I started to outline the whole shebang in black liner. And then I thought, hmmm, how hard can
it be to paint in the colors??? I have some artist brushes. If it doesnt work out, Ill just sand the whole                   thing off and start over.  Its only paint!!!  So thats what I did.
I had already painted the table in my chalk paint using DE "Lambs Wool".  I just love that name.
Its a very faint creamy pale yellow.
I was a paint mixin fool! I didnt have the exact shade of green as the pic, so I mixed a few.

 Viola!
Dont be trying to spot the differences from either side. I know butterflies are mirror images
on their wings. Mine isnt! Hah!

Thank You Graphics Fairy for the lovely print.

HOW TO UPHOLSTER AN OPEN CHAIR BACK STEP I

Ive received many messages asking for this next tutorial, so no more need to pass by these chairs.
Im going to show you how to get the back of this style chair upholstered.

We are going to start at the point after all the stripping and frame is already refinished.

I use a hand held, arm powered stapler with 1/4" staples.
I do have an electric stapler but because of the safety feature
it will not work with the tight ledge of this chair.

Here is a close up of the frame profile.
You can even see where the old staples were.

Start by shooting 3 staple in the top edge to start securing your fabric.

Figure out the best angle for your stapler to be used with your chair.

Here is a close up of where the staples are actually going into the frame.

The next place to attach your fabric is directly opposite of your first three staples,
down on the bottom edge.

Then across from each other.

Hold your fabric taught each time you shoot every staple in.

Once you have your 4 points of contact, simply go around attaching your fabric
with staples ever inch, continue to pull the fabric taught.

Once you are finished stapling, trim your fabric to 1/2 inch excess, I use small scissors cause
they are easier to work with in close corners.

Tip and turn your chair so everything you are doing is comfortable for your hands.
Make sure to pick a good work surface, I use my bed every time.

This overhang of fabric will simply be folded in and hidden inside of STEP II

You can bounce a coin off the fabric like a drum if done well.

CHANGING A WATERFALL coco handpainted desk

Ive never been a fan of water fall / art deco styled furniture, but it is made well
and there is plenty of it out there.
This piece comes from The Gelco Furniture Company in Montreal circa 1950 - 1960.

I like to change the look and feel of them and have them loved once more.

This pieces was update only with paint, hardware, and some appliques.
Not my usually tear down or build upon approach.

Setting forth to hand paint both end panels and a bit on the front takes just about as many hours
as rebuilding does.

I also played with dark wax on this piece more creatively then I have in the past.

I used appliques to disguise some of the art deco lines
and gave it a feminine feel with the handles I used.

Here is a close up of one of the hand painted end panels.

This hand painted desk was finished with Annie Sloan Old White and trimmed with Coco.

And your FIRSTFINDS etsy update for the week ...
